We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call him Mark — who lives in a multi-level home with two 200-amp services and a generator panel. One afternoon, Mark started hearing an odd beeping upstairs. It turned out to be his septic alarm blaring away.

The strange part? The septic alarm had power, but the septic pump didn’t. To make things more confusing, the same breaker that fed his kitchen refrigerator and outlets was somehow tied into the septic pump circuit. On top of that, he had a generator panel that he “kind of” knew how to use, but when he plugged in the generator, nothing worked the way he expected.

  • Interlock kit on the main panel – A sliding plate on the panel keeps the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time.
  • Dedicated generator subpanel – Essential circuits (like the septic pump, fridge, a few lights) are moved into a smaller panel that’s fed from either utility or generator power.

All of these can be safe when installed correctly. The goal is always the same: never allow generator power to backfeed into the utility lines, and keep critical circuits clearly labeled and easy to manage during an outage.

Red Flags We Look For in Septic and Generator Setups

Listening to Mark describe his system, a few red flags jumped out at us right away:

  • Septic pump sharing a breaker with kitchen outlets and the refrigerator
  • Some circuits in the “generator” panel live all the time, others only on generator (but not clearly labeled)
  • Generator runs, but nothing or only some loads pick up even when plugged into the panel

When we arrive on site for a situation like this, we typically:

  • Open the main and subpanels to trace how the generator feeds into the system
  • Verify that the septic pump is on its own circuit and correctly sized breaker
  • Test voltage at the generator inlet, transfer switch, and septic pump circuit
  • Check that any interlock or transfer mechanism is properly installed and labeled

If anything looks improvised, doubled-up, or unclear, that’s a sign we need to correct it before the next storm hits.

How We Plan a Safe Generator Setup for Septic and Essentials

  • Take clear photos of all open panels (with the covers removed only if it’s already open and safe) and the generator inlet or transfer switch.
  • Write down your generator’s make, model, and wattage so we know what it can safely run.
  • List your must-have loads during an outage — septic pump, well, fridge, medical equipment, etc.

With that information, we can usually walk in with a game plan instead of spending extra time just figuring out what’s what.

What Homeowners Can Safely Do (And What to Leave to Us)

There are several simple things homeowners can and should do regularly to keep a generator-and-septic setup ready without touching any wiring:

  • Run the generator monthly under a light load (like a small appliance) to keep it from gumming up.
  • Check fuel and oil levels according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Review your “outage routine” once or twice a year so the family knows where the panel, transfer switch, and septic alarm are.
  • Test the septic alarm as recommended by your septic contractor so you know it will warn you if the pump stops.

What you should never do is move wires, add cords into panelboards, or create “backfeed” setups using double-ended cords (a cord with two male plugs). Those can be deadly to you and to lineworkers. Any changes to your electrical system, especially around generators and septic pumps, should be handled by a licensed electrician.
